Are you an SLP getting started with Gestalt Language Processor (GLP)?
Would you like more information about how to get started?
In this episode Jessica (@GemmaJuneSLP) chats with Sarah about GLP levels 1-3, including intervention session and gestalt examples. Sarah and Jessica also discuss what their sessions were like before they switched to child-led therapy sessions and what they’ve learned from making the switch.
Key Takaways
There are 6 levels of GLP, and as levels 4-6 are advanced grammar, this episode covers levels 1-3
GLP 1 - the goal is to add new gestalts that are mitigable (meaning they are flexible and can work for a variety of situations and can be combined into new gestalts) to a child’s repertoire, focusing on a variety of communicative functions
GLP 2 - the mix and match stage where for example “Let’s go to the store” might become: let’s go to the library, let’s go to school, or “it’s fun to jump” might become: it’s fun to read, it’s fun to sing, the goal here is to increase gestalts that we can combine (or mitigate)
GLP 3 - the magic stage of single words, the goal is functional words that students can use for more than one purpose and you may be teaching noun + noun as you start in this stage
Some basics: don’t always treat gestalts as literal, for example “jumping in muddy puddles” might mean “this is really fun” so look for context and when and how students are using gestalts; a gestalt can be a word or phrase, single word gestalts in GLP1 will not be combined (yet) until later stages
Jessica and Sarah discussed: encouraging families to take a break from speech therapy, and their experience of compliance-based sessions before they knew about child-led sessions and how things have changed since implementing child-led sessions
