Are you an SLP considering private practice?
Are you considering billing insurance versus private pay?
Are you wondering about going to student’s homes versus having a physical location?
In this episode, Sarah and Jessica (@GemmaJuneSLP) walk you through their very different practices and the pros and cons of each, as well as lessons learned along the way.
Key Takeaways:
Having a mobile practice (like Jessica) means you get to see students in their natural environment (home) which is great for carryover, but it also means spending a lot of time in your car
Having a physical location is convenient and you can see more students per day, but it is expensive
Learning how to bill insurance is doable - and if you live in a small town, you may not be able to find enough private pay clients to fill your caseload (it depends a lot on how many people live nearby and how much income people in your area make on average)
Having boundaries with clients is difficult - we never learned this in graduate school!
One tip for better boundaries is to create systems that reinforce your boundaries; that way you don’t need to constantly decide where your boundaries are, and when someone crosses a boundary, you can remind them of your clinic policies
Sarah shares getting a separate clinic cell phone was one of the best things she did with her income (and she did it as soon as she could afford it)
