graphic with a person carrying a box away from office with resignation letter with text overlay: moving past fear & walking away from a job

In this episode, Sarah answers a listener question about wanting to leave a job, but having fear keep you stuck.

Step 1 Determine if You Want to Leave Your Job (find a therapist or trusted friend, implement a self care and boundaries plan with a deadline for making the decision)

Step 2 Process Your Fear & Develop an Exit Plan

Am I afraid of leaving my job because I truly want to stay or out of a fear of not knowing what’s next?

Why am I afraid?

What am I afraid will happen?

Is this fear staying at this job, or is this fear a general fear of what’s next?
If I’m afraid of what’s next, what’s some information I can gather to know more information to make this decision? Alternately, if I’ve already researched next steps - is it time to come to a decision point.

So again the questions are:

What is the situation and negative thoughts?

Are there any cognitive distortions here?

What are alternatives to this fear thought?

How can I move past this fear thought? What’s next?

Step 3 Accept Fear and Invite Self Compassion In

You can trust yourself to make a change that is good for you - even when it’s scary.

You can trust yourself to start something new and learn as you go.

You can be kind to yourself, for how difficult this job has been and how much you tried to make it work (if you are leaving).

Fear doesn’t mean stop. Fear means - invite, accept, process - and spend a bit of time here in a way that feels safe and supportive to you, in a closed container (of time or activity ie a 15 minute journal session) that feels safe and supportive to you.
