Ep 175: New Year’s Goals - 10 Lessons I've Learned

In this solo episode, Sarah shares how to reflect on the year that has passed and gently ease into the year ahead, along with 10 lessons learned as she’s created New Years Resolutions.

  1. Consider your North Star (i.e. what is most important to you)

  2. Identify your values (ex: integrity, peace, love, passion, independence, freedom, health, love, power, freedom) - choose no more than 5.

  3. Consider if you are in a growth or a maintenance phase

  4. Is this goal moving toward self compassion, or does this goal feel like I’m pushing myself/hustling?

  5. Should this be a long-term goal, or is this something I need to act on now? Sometimes making something a goal for the future just delays something we know needs to happen now.

  6. Is this a goal I want? Or a goal I think I should have? (i.e. Have I been influenced by social media, peers, family?)

  7. If you want to add something to your schedule, chances are you’ll need to take something else off your schedule

  8. We can do the work, but we can’t force the result/outcome (i.e. we can plant the tree, but that doesn’t mean that it’ll bear fruit)

  9. Sometimes the answer is more patience, not more effort - some things just take time

  10. Gas in the tank (make sure the goal you create actually addresses the need - I learned this one from Dr Rick Hanson’s Becoming Well Podcast)
